POINT LEVEL SENSOR / PRACTICAL ADVANTAGE
Use media response to understand a cleaning transition
Selected point sensors can provide helpful information when the medium at the probe changes from product to cleaning liquid. That can support a defined process indication if the responses separate under real conditions. Validate the transition and remaining residue; a single local signal does not measure total product loss or cleaning completion.
Describe the transition you need to identify
A process may need to detect when product gives way to rinse water, when a cleaning solution arrives, or when a line returns to a specified state. Define the operational decision and the acceptable uncertainty. These tasks may require different instruments or additional evidence. A level switch’s primary presence function should not be confused with a validated chemical analysis.
Expect mixtures between the endpoints
Real transitions often include diluted product, foam, bubbles and residual films. Testing only pure product and clean water can hide the difficult middle part of the sequence. Collect representative intermediate mixtures and document their temperature and composition basis. The measured response may not change linearly with concentration, and similar responses can occur for different physical conditions.
Check the exact signal semantics
If the selected sensor provides an analog or digital process value, read the manufacturer’s definition and scaling. Confirm whether the value represents a relative medium response and how errors or saturation appear. Do not assign a concentration percentage merely by labeling two endpoints. Establish the control thresholds from process evidence and retain independent quality checks where required.
Test the whole sequence
Run the representative production-to-cleaning and cleaning-to-production transitions with a suitable observation method. Include the slowest and fastest flows, hot and cold conditions, and drained residue where relevant. Decide how the PLC handles temporary ambiguous values and how an operator can diagnose them. Record the settings and the acceptance criteria so a future sensor replacement does not silently change the meaning of the transition signal.
What to keep in the project record
- Operational decision and acceptable uncertainty
- Pure media plus representative transition mixtures
- Exact signal definition, scaling and error behavior
- Independent acceptance evidence for the process
