Compare Level Sensor Technologies

Start with the control task. A point level switch can replace another switching device when the process, installation and output are compatible; it cannot directly replace a continuous transmitter.

01

Point detection

Detects whether material covers a fixed position. Suitable for high level, low level and empty-pipe indication.

02

Continuous measurement

Measures changing level or distance. Keep radar, ultrasonic or pressure measurement when you need a continuous value.

TechnologyUseful forCheck before replacing
Frequency sweep / electronic point switchCompact point detection in compatible liquids, pastes and solids.Validate coating, foam, dielectric response and model-specific limits.
Float switchSimple point detection in liquids with sufficient buoyancy.Review density, moving parts, deposits and mounting space.
Vibrating forkLiquid point detection with a proven vibrating element.Compare density, viscosity, buildup and required approvals.
Capacitive / conductive switchPoint detection based on electrical properties of the medium.Check conductivity or dielectric behavior, grounding and residue.
Optical switchCompact liquid presence detection at an optical tip.Evaluate fouling, bubbles, opacity and cleaning access.
Radar / ultrasonic / hydrostatic transmitterContinuous level, inventory or distance measurement.Retain continuous measurement; add a separate point switch if needed.

A switch responds at its installed position

Move the liquid level to see the difference between a fixed switching point and a continuously changing level. This is a principle illustration, not a response-time test.

Technology comparison

Why consider an electronic point level switch?

A compact sensing tip and no moving float can simplify installation. Performance still depends on the medium, mounting position and settings.

01

Less intrusion into the process

A short sensing tip suits compact vessels and pipes. Check insertion depth, nozzle geometry and cleaning access.

02

Match the signal to the medium

Evaluate product, foam and residue separately. Difficult media may need a sample test and adjusted switching thresholds.

03

Build the complete sensor package

Confirm the sensor, mounting adapter, seal, cable and PLC input together. A matching thread alone does not ensure interchangeability.

Medium, temperature, pressure, connection and control task: these five details make an inquiry much more useful.
