A small sensor with a clearly defined job
A Point Level Sensor reports whether material reaches a fixed sensing position. It is useful whenever the control system needs a clear decision at that point: stop filling, request replenishment, permit a pump to run or indicate an empty pipe. That direct relationship between physical location and process action is its central advantage.
The electronic Lisen and Baumer families featured on this website use compact probes. Point level detection is a broader category that also includes floats, vibrating forks and other principles, so the benefits of a short electronic probe should be distinguished from benefits shared by every point-level device.
1. Compact installation around real equipment
A short sensing tip can fit a small vessel, pipe connection or machine assembly without reserving space for a large internal mechanism. This can be particularly useful for an OEM skid where valves, access panels and piping already compete for room. Review the complete installed dimensions, including the adapter and cable bend, so the compact probe produces a compact installation.
2. No moving float in the electronic sensing assembly
An electronic probe avoids float travel and the associated float mechanism. For a suitable retrofit, that removes one set of moving components from the inspection scope. The practical question is whether those components are causing space or maintenance problems in the current duty. A probe still needs inspection for deposits, damage and the condition of its process connection.
3. A clear input for machine and PLC control
Covered and uncovered states can be connected to a defined sequence: stop a fill step, begin replenishment or remove a pump permissive. A compatible discrete output lets the controls team work directly with that threshold state. Specify the supply, PNP/NPN requirement, normal state, power-loss behavior and permitted delay together. Where supported by the chosen model, IO-Link can add parameter access and diagnostics.
4. Detection at the high or low point that matters
Locating the probe at the required threshold connects the signal to a physical process condition. In a filling tank, the remaining volume above the high-level point gives the system time to respond. In a pump-feed tank, usable liquid below the low-level point provides the response margin. A point sensor supports these functions as an input to the complete design; the probe alone does not establish a certified protection system.
5. Media-handling options for demanding duties
Baumer CleverLevel uses frequency-sweep response at the sensing tip. Selected models offer configurable windows or adaptive behavior that can be useful when products change or residue remains after draining. Treat foam detection, foam rejection and liquid detection as different requirements. A representative sample test should show whether the selected device produces the required signal in each state. Advanced functions are model-specific and must not be assumed for every Lisen or Baumer product.
6. A project scope aligned with the required information
If the process only needs a local threshold, specify that task directly. This can keep the mounting, electrical interface and commissioning scope focused. Whether it reduces total installed cost depends on the actual package. If operators need a changing level display, volume calculation or inventory record, retain a continuous measurement instrument and consider a separate point signal where useful.
Turn an advantage into a purchase requirement
| What you want to improve | Point Level Sensor opportunity | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Limited installation space | A short electronic sensing element | Available nozzle, insertion depth, cable access and drainage |
| Float-mechanism concerns | Electronic detection without a moving float | Actual medium, deposits and covered/uncovered test states |
| A clear machine input | Direct threshold switching | PLC input, output circuit, normal state and response timing |
| Changing products or residue | Selected configurable or adaptive functions | Complete recipe range, trigger behavior and acceptance evidence |
| A repeatable OEM package | Defined sensor, adapter, seal and cable | Drawings, complete order code and commissioning record |
Choose a starting family
Lisen electronic Point Level Sensor is a starting point for configured industrial detection. For Baumer, review LBFS / LBFS-2 for defined switching-window duties, PL20 / LBFx for selected adaptive or additional media functions, and LFFS for suitable elevated-temperature configurations. Family descriptions guide the discussion; the full order code defines the supplied device.
