How to design a useful level switch sample test

A useful sample test defines the required states, reproduces the difficult transitions and records the configuration. A single clean-water dip proves very little about a demanding process.

Agree on pass criteria first

List which states must produce covered and uncovered outputs. Include product, empty condition, foam, residue and cleaning fluid where relevant. Define the permitted time to switch and reset. Without those criteria, a video showing an LED change can be interpreted too generously.

Use representative conditions

Test actual product or a documented representative sample. Record temperature, concentration and mounting arrangement. Repeat immersion and draining without wiping the tip between every cycle if the real process leaves residue.

For mixtures, powders or temperature-sensitive products, include the relevant extremes. State clearly what the bench test does not reproduce, such as full vessel pressure or long-term abrasive exposure.

Keep a transferable record

Record the complete sensor code, settings, wiring and observations. A pass applies to those documented conditions. Use the result to support selection, then verify the installed control function during commissioning. A supplier demonstration should not be presented as a guarantee for every formulation or operating condition.

What to confirm for your application

  • Written wet/dry and intermediate-state criteria
  • Representative sample and temperature
  • Repeated transitions and residue
  • Complete sensor configuration
  • Limits of the test and site acceptance plan
