Define the local decision
A sensor at one pipe or tank position can be asked to distinguish air, product or another medium. The required states must be defined in advance. If an interface moves above and below that point, the switch reports only the state near the tip; it does not report the interface height throughout the tank.
Include mixtures and emulsions
Real processes may contain intermediate mixtures, contamination or emulsions rather than clean oil and clean water. These can create responses between the tested end states. Foam and residual film add further ambiguity.
A threshold demonstrated using two pure samples may fail during a transition. Specify whether ambiguous conditions must generate an alarm, stop transfer or be handled by another instrument.
Document configuration and ownership
Where the selected model supports switching windows or teach-in, keep the parameter record with the application file. Restrict unrecorded changes. If the process needs composition measurement or product-quality assurance, use an instrument qualified for that requirement rather than interpreting a point switch as a chemical analyzer.
What to confirm for your application
- Exact media and possible mixtures
- Local switching task versus continuous interface measurement
- Transition and contamination states
- Allowed ambiguity and controller response
- Model-specific configuration features
