Check the specific product data
Power-up time and process response time are different specifications. The supplied Baumer reference identifies a startup period separately from switching response. Do not assume that every device sharing an M12 connector behaves the same way after power returns.
Coordinate the controller
Define what equipment may run while the sensor is starting. A low-level permissive should not become valid merely because a controller has not yet received an alarm. Use the plant’s control philosophy and risk assessment to determine the permitted default state.
Repeated brownouts may create intermittent startup behavior. Investigate the supply and wiring instead of treating the symptom only as a product-detection problem.
Test real restart scenarios
Include cold power-up, brief supply interruption and a restart with the tip already covered. Confirm the final PLC state and any alarm acknowledgement requirements. Keep startup handling distinct from filtering used for turbulence; combining several delays can make the overall reaction much slower than expected.
What to confirm for your application
- Model-specific power-up time
- Required state before a valid signal
- Supply stability at the sensor
- Restart with covered and uncovered tip
- Total controller and sensor delay
