Gate 1 — mechanical fit
Record the connection standard, sealing method, insertion length and available clearance. Compare the sensing position as well as the overall length. A sensor that fits the nozzle may still put its active area at a different level or inside a pocket that retains liquid after the vessel drains.
Gate 2 — electrical compatibility
Identify the supply range, connector pinout, PLC input type and output load. Verify active and inactive output behavior, including the specified response to loss of power. PNP and NPN are not interchangeable labels. An available adapter cable cannot correct an incompatible output stage by itself.
Gate 3 — process function
State exactly what the old sensor is meant to detect, then test the proposed sensing principle against the real medium. Include foam, residue, temperature variation and transition direction. A switch that correctly detects clean water may behave differently in oil, syrup, powder or a cleaning mixture.
If replacing a continuous transmitter, stop and reassess the requirement: a local point switch cannot supply the same changing level value merely because it occupies a similar nozzle.
Gate 4 — documentation and supply scope
For a Baumer replacement, retain the complete order code and generation. For a Lisen proposal, obtain the agreed configuration drawing and scope. Check required approval evidence against the exact unit and its installation. Include seals, adapters, cable, settings and supporting documents in the supply comparison.
Gate 5 — controlled commissioning
Write a short acceptance procedure before removing the existing unit. Capture relevant process states, expected input logic and response timing. Test the final assembly through to the operator display or controlled equipment. Keep a rollback plan appropriate to the process and retain the old configuration record.
A five-row review table with pass, open question and required action is more useful than a general statement of equivalence. Place the order only after the responsible engineering team has resolved the requirements that matter to the installation.
