Build an installed-base record
Store the complete order code, nameplate photograph, connection drawing and output configuration for each tagged position. Include the process medium and operating envelope. Two visually similar sensors on the same skid may perform different tasks or use different materials.
Check four layers of compatibility
Mechanical compatibility covers the connection, seal, insertion and clearance. Electrical compatibility covers supply, output and input requirements. Functional compatibility covers switching behavior and settings. Documentary compatibility covers the approvals and records required by the installation.
A change in any layer can require a revised test or engineering review. Do not silently substitute a different family because stock is available.
Prepare for replacement before failure
Keep the approved configuration and acceptance procedure available with the spare. Confirm that required adapters and cables are stocked. If a product is superseded, qualify the replacement while the existing installation can still be observed, rather than improvising under production pressure.
What to confirm for your application
- Tag-specific order code and drawing
- Materials, output and settings
- Required approvals
- Accessories stocked with the spare
- Replacement acceptance procedure
