Locate the switching point from the process
The available volume above the sensing point must be considered together with the maximum filling rate and total response time. A convenient nozzle may not leave enough margin. Tank geometry means a small height difference can represent very different volumes in different vessels.
Differentiate indication from protection
An operator alarm, an automatic shutdown and a safety-instrumented function have different requirements. Do not label a standard point switch as a certified safety solution merely because it is used at a high-level point. Required reliability and approval evidence must follow the applicable plant design basis.
Plan proof and maintenance
Define how the installed function will be tested and how faults will be recognized. Include the sensor, wiring, logic and final element. Record any bypass conditions and restoration requirements through the plant’s established procedure. A sensor LED changing in a sample cup does not verify the installed overfill function.
What to confirm for your application
- Maximum filling rate and available margin
- Total sensing and shutdown time
- Alarm versus protective function
- Required independence and documentation
- Installed test and maintenance provisions
