Add a local threshold to a continuous level view
A Point Level Sensor can provide a separate high/low indication at a physical location while radar supplies the tank-level trend. This gives the control design two distinct kinds of information. If the task only needs one local threshold, a point sensor may also allow a more focused instrumentation scope.
How the methods differ
A radar transmitter typically measures distance to a surface and converts it to a level value. A point switch answers whether material is present at its installed location.
When to retain the existing technology
Keep a suitable continuous transmitter when operators need level trends, usable volume, inventory or a changing level value.
When to review a point-switch alternative
Add a point switch where a separate fixed-threshold signal is needed. Replacing a continuous transmitter with a single point switch removes information and may change the control strategy.
| Decision factor | Existing technology | Electronic point-switch review |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A changing distance or level value. | A local wet/dry or material-present state. |
| Installation | Review beam path, internals and process conditions. | Review the fixed mounting height and active-tip contact. |
| Control role | Inventory, continuous control or derived alarms. | High/low, permissive or presence indication. |
A practical replacement scenario
A tank needs both a percentage display and an additional high-level input. Use the transmitter for the display and assess a separate point switch for the second function.
Five checks before replacement
- The replacement answers the same control question.
- The sensing location sees the intended process state.
- The complete mounted assembly meets the simultaneous temperature and pressure duty.
- Supply, pin assignment, output logic and PLC input are compatible.
- The representative-media test and required documentation are accepted.
Use the sensor selector to prepare the application review. A proposed alternative is a candidate for evaluation, not an approved interchangeability statement.
