Radar vs point level switch: replacement or complement?

A radar transmitter and a point level switch usually serve different tasks. Keep radar when a continuous level value is required; consider a point switch for a defined threshold or a separate alarm channel.

Preserve the information the process needs

A radar transmitter evaluates a reflected microwave signal to determine distance. A point switch reports material presence near one sensor location. A cheap point switch cannot replace the percentage indication, trend or volume calculation provided by a continuous radar system.

A process described as “radar replacement” sometimes needs only a high-level alarm. Clarify that requirement before deciding whether a discrete switch is sufficient.

A complementary arrangement

A tank can use radar for inventory and a separately installed switch for a high or low threshold. The switch location should follow the process requirement, including vessel geometry and response time. Independence and safety requirements must be assessed at system level; different technologies alone do not guarantee a safe arrangement.

A fair cost comparison

Compare like-for-like functions. A point switch may reduce complexity for a simple permissive, but adding multiple switches, wiring and PLC logic can outweigh an apparent hardware saving. Include the operational value of a continuous trend when it helps diagnose filling or draining behavior.

What to confirm for your application

  • Need for continuous indication or trending
  • Discrete alarms already implemented in the transmitter
  • Available independent mounting point
  • Required safety and independence
  • Total installed scope
