Lubricating oils, compatible hydraulic oils and oil-based process media
What the sensor needs to do
A successful test in water says little about a low-response oil or a cold, viscous drained film.
| Location | Control objective | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Oil reservoirs | Fixed high or low thresholds. | Include cold starts and hot running conditions. |
| Lubrication skids | Oil-presence feedback at a chosen point. | Confirm that the point represents usable supply. |
| Oil/water studies | Local discrimination of defined media. | Validate separation in sensor response; avoid assuming continuous interface tracking. |
Installation and integration
Mount where the tip contacts the bulk oil when the target condition occurs. Verify compatibility with additives, seals and cleaning products. In hot systems, account for the temperature at the electronics and connector as well as the process temperature.
A representative test plan
Test the lightest-response oil, cold oil, hot oil, aerated oil and the film after drainage. If water contamination matters, test the expected emulsion rather than only clean layers of pure oil and water. An emulsion may not produce the same response as either original phase.
A common selection mistake
Describing a point sensor as an oil-quality analyzer or as a continuous oil/water interface meter without a demonstrated measurement basis.
What to include in your inquiry
- Oil grade, additives and approximate dielectric data if available
- Cold-start and hot operating temperatures
- Foam, entrained air and contamination conditions
- Required output behavior and installation geometry
Choose a starting point
Review Lisen electronic point switches for a configured industrial package or Baumer CleverLevel families for a documented manufacturer selection. Selection depends on the exact medium, configuration and duty. A family name alone is insufficient to approve the application.
