APPLICATION ENGINEERING

Level sensors for food & beverage

Manage tank limits, product presence and pump permissives through production and cleaning.

MEDIA TO REVIEW

Milk, yogurt, syrup, sauces, edible ingredients and beverage blends

What the sensor needs to do

A sensor that sees a residual film as a full pipe can keep a transfer permissive active after usable product has drained.

LocationControl objectiveSelection focus
Balance tanksA defined low level before the transfer pump draws air.Check the lowest usable volume and outlet geometry.
Filling equipmentProduct present before starting a filling sequence.Review bubbles, splashes and intermittent flow.
CIP returnA repeatable distinction between defined process states.Test product, rinse water and the actual cleaning solutions.

Installation and integration

Use a documented hygienic connection with a compatible seal and the specified mounting orientation. The active tip must contact the bulk medium without sitting in a dead pocket. Review drainability, cleanability and access to the connector as part of the complete assembly. An industrial G½ thread does not become a hygienic connection merely because both parts are stainless steel.

A representative test plan

Use representative product at the coldest and hottest production conditions. Record a clean dry state, a covered state, the drained coated state, foam where present, and the complete cleaning cycle. A single beaker test with water cannot establish performance with yogurt or syrup.

A common selection mistake

Treating a washdown rating as evidence of process-side hygienic approval, or assuming a short cleaning-temperature limit permits continuous hot operation.

What to include in your inquiry

  • Product composition, viscosity and normal temperature
  • CIP/SIP chemicals, concentrations, time and temperature
  • Mounting drawing, connection standard and seal
  • Desired wet/dry output and PLC input type

Choose a starting point

Review Lisen electronic point switches for a configured industrial package or Baumer CleverLevel families for a documented manufacturer selection. Selection depends on the exact medium, configuration and duty. A family name alone is insufficient to approve the application.
