POINT LEVEL SENSOR / PRACTICAL ADVANTAGE

Detect accumulation at a selected collection point

A suitably chosen Point Level Sensor can provide a local indication when liquid reaches the planned height in a collection tray. Its compact form can help where space is limited. Shape and drainage of the tray must bring the expected liquid to the tip before that signal can support the intended response.

Start with the collection path

Identify where a leak is expected to originate and how it reaches the collection point. A sensitive sensor cannot detect liquid that drains elsewhere, evaporates before arrival or pools behind an obstruction. Review the tray material, slope and drainage arrangement. Define whether rainwater, washdown or condensation should trigger the same response as a process leak.

Match the tip to the minimum pool

A point sensor detects local contact, not every trace of moisture over a large area. Confirm how much liquid is needed to reach the active sensing region in the proposed mounting. A sensor fitted through a deep boss may require more pooling than expected. Include surface wetting behavior and the possibility of liquid clinging to a wall rather than collecting at the lowest point.

Test all expected liquids

Water, oil and cleaning solutions can produce different responses. Use the least favorable relevant liquid and test thin films, a developing pool, drainage and residue. Specify the desired reset behavior after cleanup. If differentiation between a process leak and cleaning water is requested, demonstrate that the actual media responses remain distinguishable under the expected temperature and contamination range.

Define the response and maintenance method

Agree on alarm routing, latching, acknowledgment and follow-up. A detection signal without a defined operational response may have little practical value. Provide a way to inspect and clean the tray without defeating the detection function indefinitely. If the application requires a regulated leakage-protection system, verify the complete required approvals and installation conditions rather than assuming that a general-purpose point sensor provides them.

What to keep in the project record

  • Leak sources and collection geometry
  • Minimum detectable pool at the sensing tip
  • All relevant process and cleaning liquids
  • Alarm, reset, inspection and required approvals
