Hydrostatic level vs point detection in tanks

Hydrostatic measurement derives level from pressure and the assumed liquid density. A point switch reports local coverage. Use the approach that supplies the information needed by the controller.

Pressure is not the same as height

For a simple static liquid column, pressure contribution follows p = ρgh. Changes in density affect the relationship between measured pressure and calculated height. In a pressurized vessel, headspace pressure must also be accounted for by the measurement arrangement.

A point switch does not calculate height from pressure. Its mechanical location establishes the threshold, but product response and mounting still affect switching.

When the two methods work together

A tank may use pressure measurement for a level trend and a local point device for a low-level signal. Place the point switch where it detects the condition of interest; a sump or nozzle can remain wet after the usable tank is empty. Consider cleaning and chemical compatibility for both wetted devices.

Do not discard needed process data

If operators use continuous pressure-derived level for batching, inventory or remote monitoring, a switch cannot supply an equivalent value. If the entire duty is a fixed refill threshold, a switch may be worth evaluating. Confirm the change with operations and automation staff rather than assuming an unused display has no function.

What to confirm for your application

  • Liquid-density variation
  • Open or pressurized vessel
  • Required continuous data
  • Residual liquid at the mounting point
  • Need for an additional independent threshold
