Define acceptable and unacceptable states
List the process states before adjusting a sensor: clean air, fully wetted product, drained residue, foam, rinse water and cleaning solution. Mark the required switching state for each. If operators disagree about whether foam should count as full, the sensor cannot resolve that control-policy question for them.
When a window is worth reviewing
A switching window is a candidate when relevant responses can be separated consistently. Baumer describes window-trigger applications that distinguish media or foam. The engineering question is whether the observed response ranges remain distinct across the actual process variation. A setting that works for one fresh sample may lose margin after temperature, concentration or residue changes.
When an adaptive mode is worth reviewing
An adaptive trigger can be useful when the process frequently changes media or develops adherence. Baumer describes adaptive adjustment for appropriate PL20 applications. Confirm that the complete ordered version provides the intended mode, and ask how it responds during startup, recipe changes and cleaning. Do not assume all CleverLevel generations have identical modes or configuration tools.
Compare both against one acceptance procedure
Use the same mounting location, sample preparation and timing for each candidate. Record the raw observation, output transition and PLC indication. Repeat transitions in both directions; wetting a clean tip and draining a coated tip are different tests. Record any teach-in or parameter change, because a result without its settings cannot be reproduced.
If both modes satisfy the acceptance criteria, compare maintenance implications: who may change settings, how settings are backed up, and what a replacement sensor requires. A technically suitable choice must also be manageable by the team that will operate it.
What to confirm for your application
- State table agreed by operations and controls staff
- Trigger mode supported by the exact version
- Recipe, temperature and residue variation
- Transition timing in both directions
- Saved settings and replacement procedure
