A probe can carry more information
A guided-wave system uses a probe as the path for its measurement signal. Depending on the instrument and process, it may provide continuous level and additional interface information. A compact point switch cannot reproduce a full vertical profile simply by detecting one local state.
Different mechanical demands
A continuous probe needs a suitable installation length and clearance. Review loads, agitators, product movement and vessel internals. A compact point device may reduce protrusion at a single alarm point, but it requires a suitable local process connection. The availability of one existing top nozzle does not mean a side-mounted switch is a straightforward retrofit.
Select a complementary role
A switch can help provide a separate low or high signal where this is required and the process permits an appropriate mounting location. Confirm how the controller treats disagreement between instruments. A disagreement should prompt a defined response instead of silently selecting whichever reading is more convenient.
What to confirm for your application
- Continuous or interface measurement requirements
- Available mounting locations
- Mechanical clearance and loads
- Control response to conflicting signals
- Approval and documentation requirements
