A complete level sensor selection checklist

Write a short process description

State whether the duty is high level, low level, empty pipe or continuous measurement. Identify the medium by composition and concentration where possible. Include viscosity, suspended solids, foam and deposits. Record normal operation, startup, cleaning and upset conditions separately; the most severe condition may occur outside production.

Build a compatible assembly

Specify the connection standard, seal arrangement, insertion depth, wetted materials and cable orientation. Match PNP or NPN output to the PLC input and check its current demand. Include power supply tolerance and the required state when product is absent.

If approval documents are required, identify the exact approval and jurisdiction. A stainless steel housing, an IP rating or a material report does not substitute for product-specific hygienic or hazardous-area documentation.

Make the quotation comparable

Ask every supplier to list included adapters, seals, cables and configuration services. Attach a nameplate photo when replacing an existing sensor. Require any deviation from the requested duty to be stated. This gives procurement a fair comparison and gives commissioning staff a clear record of what was selected.
